Discover True Asian Kitchen

If you’ve ever wandered down Victoria Street craving dumplings, sizzling woks, and the comforting aroma of soy, ginger, and garlic, True Asian Kitchen at 154 Victoria St, Richmond VIC 3121, Australia, feels like a natural stop. I’ve visited more than once, sometimes for a quick weeknight dinner and other times with friends who take their Asian cuisine very seriously. Each visit left me with the same impression: this place understands flavor balance and consistency.

Victoria Street is often called Melbourne’s unofficial Little Saigon, and competition here is no joke. That’s why I tend to judge restaurants not just on taste, but on technique and authenticity. On my first visit, I ordered a classic pho and a side of crispy spring rolls. The broth was clear yet deeply aromatic, which tells me it had been simmered properly for hours. According to culinary research published by food science departments at universities like the University of Melbourne, long-simmered bone broth extracts collagen and amino acids that enhance umami and mouthfeel. You can taste that difference immediately. The noodles were tender without being mushy, and the herbs were fresh and vibrant.

The menu is broad without feeling overwhelming. You’ll find Vietnamese staples like banh mi and rice paper rolls, alongside stir-fried noodles, fried rice, and comforting curry dishes. What stands out is the attention to preparation. For example, when I ordered a stir-fried beef with vegetables, the beef was sliced thinly against the grain. That small detail makes a huge difference in tenderness. Professional chefs often stress this technique because it shortens muscle fibers, resulting in a softer bite. It’s a simple method, but it shows kitchen expertise.

Food safety and hygiene also matter to me. The World Health Organization regularly highlights the importance of proper food handling and temperature control to prevent foodborne illness. During my visits, the dining area was clean, tables were cleared quickly, and takeaway orders were packed neatly and securely. While I can’t see behind the kitchen doors, the front-of-house professionalism gives confidence in overall operations.

One thing I appreciate is how the staff guide diners through the menu. On a later visit, I brought a friend who avoids gluten. The team clearly explained which dishes could be adjusted and which sauces contained soy or wheat. That transparency builds trust. It’s not just about serving food; it’s about understanding dietary needs and communicating clearly.

Customer reviews online consistently mention generous portions and fair pricing. In my experience, that checks out. The rice dishes are hearty, and the noodle bowls easily satisfy a big appetite. Richmond locals often talk about value, especially with so many restaurants clustered along the same strip. When a place manages to combine quality ingredients, proper technique, and reasonable pricing, it earns repeat customers.

Atmosphere-wise, it’s relaxed and unpretentious. You won’t find over-the-top decor or gimmicks. Instead, the focus stays on the food. That simplicity actually works in its favor. The sounds of sizzling pans and casual chatter create a lively but comfortable setting. It’s suitable for a casual date, a family meal, or even a solo lunch break.

I’ve also noticed how quickly takeaway orders are prepared without compromising quality. That balance requires a well-organized kitchen workflow. In busy Asian kitchens, mise en place-having ingredients prepped and ready-keeps service efficient. Watching staff coordinate during peak hours gave me confidence that the operation is structured and experienced.

For anyone exploring Richmond’s dining scene, True Asian Kitchen holds its own among long-standing favorites. While no restaurant is perfect-menu items may vary slightly depending on ingredient availability-the overall consistency has been reliable in my visits. Fresh herbs, properly cooked proteins, balanced sauces, and attentive service come together in a way that feels thoughtful rather than rushed.

Between the diverse menu, central location on Victoria Street, and steady stream of positive reviews, it’s easy to see why diners keep returning. Whether you’re craving a steaming bowl of noodles, a fragrant curry, or a quick banh mi on the go, this Richmond spot delivers flavors that are both comforting and confidently executed.

  • Simple delicious food. Cantonese/malaysian style. Decent roast meats. Average price for the area. Plenty of seating. We’ve been here a few times. One night I was craving crispy noodles and was saddened that it wasn’t on the menu but thought I would ask anyway. Turns out it’s actually on their board! Definitely hit the spot :) Pictured: 2 Roast meats and noodles $17.90 Crispy noodle combination $17.90 (?) Pork dumplings (10pcs) $15.50 Service: Friendly but they did miss part of our order once but was quickly rectified.

  • I have to say, the crispy pork is hands down the best I’ve had! The pricing is very reasonable, especially considering the quality and taste of the food. It’s a great place for a casual meal with friends or family. Highly recommended if you’re looking for delicious and affordable Malaysian Chinese cuisine! Will definitely be coming back for more!

  • Really good char siew and roast pork rice— better than most coffee shops/hawker centers in Singapore (of course it’s Melbourne priced too but imo it’s worth it)

  • I could have easily licked that plate clean as an honour to the cooks and the generousness and flavoursomeness of that BBQ pork & double eggs with rice. Or, in lieu of that, I will have to come back for more, more, more. The photos on the wall are soooo enticing. Gloss, pretty. I ordered based on a pic on the wall. After I ordered, while waiting, a cook came through carring a rack of cooked pork like the most beautiful smelling gold you have ever. And after he was gone and the smell dissipated I felt sad and then realised that would be my pork! The meal came out in about ten minutes, freshly cooked eggs and pak choy (lightly cooked so it retained its crispness). I ate the meal mostly with chopsticks and only used a spoon at the last grains of rice (none wasted). Like I said, could have licked the plate clean. There were few people in at the time (a Wintery Tuesday in late July, 730pm) so I could have risked it. In all seriousness, I was heavily grateful for this meal and thanked the chef on the way out. Though I live and work in Geelong, I will be returning here for more, more, more.
